RWA Tokenisation & NFT Compression

Real world asset (RWA) tokenisation is the process of representing physical and traditional financial assets in the form of digital assets (tokens or NFTs) on a blockchain.

These digital assets can be bought and sold like traditional securities, allowing for increased liquidity, faster settlement, lower costs, and enhanced risk management.

In short, they lower the entry barriers and give a broader range of investors access to real world assets — efficiently and securely.

As you read this, the tokenisation of real world assets is well underway.

Siemens, Germany’s third-largest publicly traded company by market cap, recently issued its first digital bond worth ~ $64 million on Polygon.

In addition to providing a shared ledger, which reduces the need for reconciliations, the blockchain securities are issued directly to investors, sidestepping the cost and need for intermediaries. Also, paper-based certificates are no longer required.

Issuing a bond on Polygon is a win for web3. Period.

However, cost-effectiveness will become a competitive advantage as more and more enterprises, brands, and creative studios start leveraging digital assets to enhance their respective business models.

Having said that, this specifically applies to NFTs, as they depict the perfect platform for the tokenisation of real world assets.

Although Solana is more cost-effective than other blockchains such as Ethereum when it comes to minting and storing NFTs, powering enterprise-level activity is still expensive.

To combat this, Metaplex introduced on-chain compression to lower the costs for both minting and storing digital assets — allowing for cost-effective use cases with billions of users.

Compression for NFTs on Solana also allows businesses to mitigate the security risks of layer 2 protocols and bridges, a pivotal requirement for larger enterprises.

Overall, NFT compression allows for the next generation of metaverse, gaming, and tokenisation projects to be ushered in.

We're keeping tabs on this and are excited for what's yet to come!
